I can think of few things I dislike more than marketing myself. Dislike is not even a strong enough word. There’s an unnerving emotional pain involved, a struggle within that sounds like, God, this feels so self-focused, putting myself out there, but it’s something I have to do, don’t I?

Yes. You must. Here’s why:

You can’t just sit back and rely on customers and leads to carry your business. Though there’s a cacophony of chatter out there on social media, there’s still a voice missing—yours. As much as your customers love you, you are still your best advocate. And there are ways to self-promote that are not really as negative and braggish as you think.

People want to connect with real people, not a business or a brand. They want YOU. Be there for them. Be authentic. Reach out. By blogging. By posting on social media. Be there with content that has value. Offer wisdom and ideas.

You own your story, and you can tell it in ways that don’t feel like you’re bragging. Share your passions, things that inspire you, values that drive you, issues that are important to you. Customers ultimately want to connect with who you are and do business with someone they like and relate to and admire. Be that person, and watch how it helps your business grow.

That same group of people who helped you get where you are can also help you grow. You have a network that you can put to work for you. Your tribe—no matter how big or small—is a force to be reckoned with. Use your connection with your peeps to harness that strength. Mobilize your troops. You’d be surprised how many people want to help you succeed.

It’s not really as painful as you think to put yourself out there. Be courageous. Be yourself.  Be confident that what you have to offer is more than just a product or service. There’s no one better qualified to sell yourself than you. Just don’t think of it as selling or promoting—think of it as being, and that will help you get past the internal struggle.  What is one new thing you can do this week toward being (a.k.a. marketing yourself)?

P.S.  If you liked this post, I would love for you to share it with your peeps on social media.  Appreciate ya!
